Dorothy Dunlop's recently published study "Objective physical activity measurement in the osteoarthritis initiative: Are guidelines being met?" is in the news again. Charlesnika Evans, PhD, MPH been invited to the editorial board of the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (JSCM). JSCM is the peer-reviewed official journal of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals and the American Spinal Injury Association. JSCM is listed in all of the major medical and scientific databases. Its Impact Factor, which has risen each year for the past 5 years, is 1.442.

Juliet Yonek, MPH and Romana Hasnain-Wynia, PhD recently published a report examining the disparities of health resources throughout Chicago. "A Profile of Health and Health Resources within Chicago’s 77 Communities" concludes that South and Southwest sides have the poorest health and resources in the city, especially in terms of childhood obesity, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy and motor vehicle injury and death. “Documenting health and resources at the community level helps people feel accountable. Now they can see how to make a difference,” said Yonek, research associate at the Center for Health Equity. Dr. Ann Borders was the recipient of the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition, Loretta Lacey Maternal and Child Health Advocacy Research Award for 2011. This award is provided to an individual who conducts research and uses the findings to advocate for improvements in maternal and child health.

Still making headlines, Dr. Ruchi Gupta, Director of the Center for Maternal-Child Healthcare, was recently featured on PBS's Newshour and WTTW's Chicago Tonight regarding her recent study on Food Allergy Prevalence and Distribution. The study surveyed 40,000 American households to find that neary eight percent of children (roughly six million) in the United States have a food allergy. View the Newshour interview via PBS.

Larry Mannheim, PhD, of the Chronic Disease Care and Outcomes Center, was appointed to the Institute of Medicine Committee on Evaluation of the Lovell Federal Health Care Center Merger. The committee will evaluate whether the integrated Department of Defense and Veterans Administration (DoD/VA) health care facility in North Chicago is more beneficial to DoD and VA than their independent facilities in serving the needs of their eligible populations. To the extent that data is available, the committee will evaluate health outcomes, patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction, quality of care, and costs of care.

Donna Woods, EdM PhD, Director of the Center for Halthcare Quality and Safety Innovation, and a team of Co-Investigators at Northwestern were awarded one of the CHIPRA Pediatric Measures - Center of Excellence grants in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Medical Center (PI), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This research team included faculty from the Institute of Healthcare Studies, Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medical Social Sciences, Hospital Medicine, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Maternal Fetal Medicine. Larry Mannheim, PhD with the Health Economics Center, published an article on the impact of Medicare's prospective payment system for inpatient rehabilitation facilities on stroke patient outcomes. Find it on PubMed: 20068431.

Jane Holl, MD MPH, Director of the Institute of Healthcare Studies, recently appeared on WTTW's Chicago Tonight to talk about The National Children's Study,which will begin enrolling pregnant or soon to be pregnant Chicago-area women in the study. The goal of the Study is to improve the health and well-being of children and contribute to understanding the role various factors have on health and disease. "By participating in this study, women and their families can really contribute to understanding and improving the health of children in their neighborhoods and across the United States," said Dr. Holl. The Centers of the Institute for Healthcare Studies

Six centers support the vision and mission of the Institute for Healthcare Studies through focused and collaborative research: Center for Healthcare Policy and Inplementation, Center for Healthcare Equity, Center for Healthcare Economics, Center for Maternal-Child Healthcare, Chronic Disease Care and Outcomes Center and the Center for Healthcare Quality and Safety Innovation. Each center provides a home for investigators conducting related research under the health services research umbrella of clinical and translational, outcomes, and comparative effectiveness. As a group, the six centers are complementary and provide a context for investigators to work together to affect change in local, national, and global health and healthcare policy.
