Strategies for Improving Clinician Communication:  Focus Groups

  • Conduct 60-90 minute, audio-taped focus groups at each hospital using a standardized protocol.
  • 63 focus groups were conducted
  • Inquiries about effective and problematic communication between clinicians, solutions, and “work arounds”
  • Themes cover the breadth of clinician communication issues related to patient safety
  • Results are aggregated across institutions
  • Key findings included identifying several key contexts for communication: standardized communication, transitions of care, assessment of patient acuity, teamwork and team culture
