(1) NU Graduate School Application Form On-line: On-line applications for the 2010-2011 academic year can be submitted only after October 5, 2009. Deadline for receipt of completed applications is December 1, 2009. Submissions after the deadline will be accepted only with permission from the IGP Office.
To begin the on-line application process, read the Instructions and complete an Online Application via The Northwestern University Graduate School web site.
In the Personal Information section on Page 1, choose "Life Sciences: PhD (L20PH)" as your Academic Program from the pull-down menu.
Note - if you wish to apply for the combined degree (PhD-MPH) program, please choose "Life Sciences and Public Health: PhD (L21PH)" as your program.
The nonrefundable application fee must be paid via credit card at the time of application submission and the application will not be processed without payment of the fee. The application fee cannot be waived. Additional information regarding the application fee is online at http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/admission/materials
(2) Test Scores
- GRE: General Record Examination (GRE) scores for the general test ARE required for consideration to the IGP program, though no subject test is necessary. MCAT scores cannot be substituted. Please have your official GRE scores sent by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) directly to The Northwestern University Graduate School (Institution code 1565, no department code needed). You should also self-report your scores as part of the online application
- TOEFL: For international students, valid TOEFL scores are required by the NU Graduate School. The IGP cannot wiave this requirement. The test must be taken no more than two years before the intended quarter of entry. (If you are applying for fall 2009 entry, test scores must be no older than September 2007.) For the TOEFL, you must score 600 or higher on the paper-based test, 250 or higher on the computer-based test, 100 or higher on the internet based test. For the IELTS, you must receive a score of 7.0 or higher. The Graduate School's school code for TOEFL is 1565. Those taking the paper-based exam should select department code 01. When prompted, IBT test takers should request that their scores be sent to the graduate office and then select the program name that most closely matches their program of interest. If no match is available, the test taker may choose option 99.
You should also self-report your scores as part of the online application.
(3) Supporting Materials:
In addition to personal information provided in the online application, you will need to submit the following supporting materials to complete your application. Some of the items (see below) may be submitted on-line. Any supporting documentation sent as hard copies should go directly to the IGP Program Office, preferably in a single package, at the address below.
- Letters of Recommendation:
Please arrange for the submission of letters from 3 or more advisors/professors who are familiar with your work and achievements and can assess your potential to succeed in a Ph.D. program. Be sure to include letters from your research advisor(s).
Letters may be submitted either on-line by your recommenders or through the mail.
For on-line submission, please follow the instructions on the Apply Yourself web site.
If the letters are to be submitted by mail, it is best that you obtain them in sealed, signed envelopes and submit them in a single package with any other materials you are mailing. However, a recommender can mail the letter directly to the IGP if preferred.
If your letters will be sent as hard copies, please download the IGP evaluation form (PDF or Word file version) to provide to the writers. Complete the top portion of the form and sign it. This form is not required for on-line letter submission.

- Official Transcripts:
Provide the IGP with duplicate copies from each postsecondary institution attended. Official transcripts should be in sealed and signed envelopes. Transcripts may be mailed directly to the IGP from the issuing institution if needed.
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae if applicable
- Personal Statement:
The IGP seeks a detailed (one to three page) document describing your research experiences, explaining your current goals and career ambitions, and outlining the reasons for your selection of a specific field of graduate study.
Please note that you can submit a personal statement (described below) either on-line or via mail with your other documents.
Instructions for your Personal Statement:
Describe your goals and motivations in one page or less. Consider including the topics below:
- Your reasons for choosing to attend graduate school.
- Your career goals.
- How you have prepared yourself to reach your goals.
- Your reasons for choosing Northwestern and the IGP.
- The field(s) of study you are currently interested in and the reasons for your interest(s). Applicants should indicate one of the nine IGP Curricula in which they plan to specialize.
Describe your previous research experience(s) in a second section of two pages or less. As a guide you may address some of following questions:
- What were the larger research questions that you were investigating?
- What aspect of the overall problem did you pursue and why was this aspect important?
- What was your individual contributions to the project(s)?
- What did you learn from the experience and how did it shape your career goals?
- Are there any individual accomplishments from your research (papers, presentations, etc). you wish to mention?
