Local CommunitiesUnder the leadership of chair, Russell Robertson, MD, the Department of Family and Community Medicine promotes patient-centered care through education, research, and community outreach programs. In addition to playing an active role in medical student and resident education, Department faculty are committed to research projects aimed at improving community patient care, including studies of disparities in select populations, domestic violence prevention, and the needs and challenges associated with pediatric and adolescent patients. The Department recently established affiliations with four community clinics—federally-qualified health centers that provide care to the underserved. Physicians working in these clinics are now part of the Feinberg faculty, strenthening the broad teaching and research responsibilities of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Feinberg student volunteer programs also help operate these clinics, providing weekly care to wide-ranging patient populations. Although diagnoses and care may differ, the goal of all clinics is the same—to provide care while offering a unique "front lines" educational experience to first- and second-year medical students.
