On Wednesday, October 29, friends, family, and colleagues joined together to celebrate the investiture of David Mahvi, MD, as the James R. Hines Professor of Surgery. Dr. Mahvi was recruited to Northwestern University as the Hines Professor and chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in 2008. Led by emcee, Jeffrey Glassroth, MD, Vice Dean and Chief Academic Officer of the Feinberg School of Medicine, the evening celebration, held at the Park Hyatt, was well attended by division and Department of Surgery colleagues, including Dr. Mahvi’s formal extoller, Nathaniel J. Soper, MD, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery. Describing Dr. Mahvi as more than a teacher, Dr. Soper said, “David’s coming to Northwestern is a real boon to me personally, and to us as an institution and department. In the brief time he has been in Chicago, he has already shown that he will be the kind of role model that Jim Hines would be proud of.” A national and international authority in the field of hepatobiliary cancer, Dr. Mahvi’s leadership reflects that of the physician in whose honor the professorship is named. In accepting the honor, Dr. Mahvi focused on the impact of the Hines Professorship in his recruitment to Northwestern. He specifically recognized Mrs. Hines and spoke of Dr. Hines’ impact on surgical education at the medical school. The James R. Hines Professorship of Surgery was established in 1993 by former patients, medical school colleagues, and friends to honor James R. Hines (MD ’51), distinguished professor of surgery at the medical school. In 1954, Dr. Hines began his tenure at Northwestern University, where he served for more than 40 years. He was elected to membership in many professional societies and organizations, and served as president of the Illinois Surgical Society and the Chicago Surgical Society. Throughout his career, he was esteemed for his excellence in teaching and his compassion for patients—qualities fittingly represented in the incumbent, as well. Dr. Mahvi earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1981. He completed his residency at Duke University, where he dedicated two years to laboratory investigation in tumor immunology under Olja J. Finn, PhD, and Richard S. Metzgar, PhD. As the James R. Hines Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Mahvi will continue his research, focused on the development of new biomedical devices in the treatment of liver cancer.
