Jonathan D. Licht, MD

Honoring Dedication, Integrity, and Creativity

The investiture of Jonathan D. Licht, MD, as the Johanna Dobe Professor of Hematology/Oncology

On February 20, 2008, surrounded by colleagues, mentors, and family, Jonathan D. Licht, MD, was invested as the Johanna Dobe Professor of Hematology/Oncology at the Feinberg School of Medicine. In welcoming guests to the event, Dean Larry Jameson referred to Dr. Licht and benefactor, Johanna Dobe, saying "Professorship holders embody the ideals of the individuals who create chairs."

Samuel Waxman, MD

According to Samuel Waxman, MD, Distinguished Service Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and extoller of Dr. Licht, the newly-invested professor embodies the ideals of "dedication, integrity, creativity, and a desire to excel." Dr. Waxman went on to say "Jon rapidly climbed the academic ladder at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, gaining the respect of all members of the community. His impact at Northwestern is predictably high, and should benefit many."

The investiture ceremony represented the highest honor the Feinberg School of Medicine can bestow upon its faculty. When asked about the accolade, Dr. Licht commented, "I am deeply honored by the confidence Dr. Jameson and Northwestern have placed in me with this Professorship. It is a great honor to lead such a fine group of clinicians and investigators, and to bring this already outstanding division to a new level of achievement."

Dr. Licht joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 2006 as chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and associate director for clinical sciences research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. He was named the Dobe Professor in 2007. Earlier in his career, Dr. Licht was a faculty member at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Biology, and was awarded the titles of professor, chief of Hematology/Oncology, and associate dean for cancer programs.  His laboratory focuses on the study of aberrant transcriptional repression as a cause of hematological malignancy (including acute promyelocytic leukemia and multiple myeloma) and has utilized small molecules and peptide interference strategies to reverse this repression.

The Johanna Dobe Professor of Hematology/Oncology was named in honor of Miss Dobe, born in Chicago in 1896, the daughter of German immigrants. Her father, Frederick W. Dobe, was the founder and operator of the School of Industrial Design, a world-wide correspondence school, and the builder of Libertyville, Illinois’ first formal theater. Upon her death in 1969, a bequest from Miss Dobe's estate established a fund to support research in the field of hematology/oncology.  In 2007, this fund was expanded to create the Professorship, of which Dr. Licht is the inaugural holder.
