A Lecture Featuring Alfred E. Mann
Will the future of medicine be shaped by the biological discoveries already made or the technological advances we have yet to create? To Alfred E. Mann, the answer would be “both.” A noted entrepreneur, humanitarian, and philanthropist, Mr. Mann was the featured speaker at a lecture hosted by the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Children’s Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program on October 22. Also featuring remarks from Robert Kern, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and Nancy M. Young, MD, associate professor of otolaryngology and head of the Section of Otology and Neurotology at Children’s Memorial Hospital, the event presented a diverse range of information to the faculty, students, staff, and friends in attendance. In his presentation, entitled "Creating a Successful Medical Device Enterprise," Mr. Mann shared insights from his remarkable professional history that he began as president and founder of Spectrolab, an electro-optical and aerospace systems company, and Heliotek, a semiconductor and electro-optical components manufacturer. Over the course of more than forty years, he has successfully created, developed, and sold multiple business ventures, and currently serves as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of MannKind Corporation, and chairman of Advanced Bionics Corporation. Highlighting his view of the future of biomedical research as well as the strategies behind his vast entrepreneurial accomplishments, his lecture inspired guests to continue creating and searching for medical solutions.
