Named Professors Gather at Feinberg’s Inaugural Meeting of the Minds Luncheon

More than 75 named professors at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine joined Eric G. Neilson, MD, Lewis Landsberg Dean and Vice President of Medical Affairs, at the inaugural Meeting of the Minds luncheon, held recently at the University Club of Chicago.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Neilson shared that the gathering was intended to thank the school’s named professors for their many accomplishments and contributions to their respective fields. He acknowledged their important leadership role at Northwestern.

“As marquee researchers, educators, and physicians, your work is the future of medicine,” he said.

John McCarter, President and CEO of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, served as the keynote speaker. In introducing him, Dr. Neilson shared “I want this luncheon to be a visible connection between the Northwestern medical community and the City of Chicago. We are only one of many great institutions in this city. John represents one of the great museums in our city, nation, and world.

Mr. McCarter shared highlights of key programs and initiatives that are underway at The Field Museum, touching on a number of exciting exhibits and projects. A biomechanics exhibit is currently under development and will feature the marvels of natural engineering, including spider webs that are stronger than steel, and fish that can project their jaws out to half their body length to capture prey. The museum is working on three of these exhibits—one that will be based at the museum, one that will tour the United States, and the third which will tour across Europe and Africa. At this exhibition, which opens in 2014, visitors can meet scientists who investigate these plants and animals, experiment with new adaptations and applications, and learn about the future of biomechanics and biomimicry—fields that are re-energizing the imaginations of architects, engineers, and designers alike.
