The Nancy and Warren Furey Medical Education ProfessorshipDrs. Warren W. and Nancy L. Furey met during their first year of medical school at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1956, and were married one year after their graduation in 1961. They have spent the vast majority of their careers practicing at the alma mater that brought them together, in the fields of internal medicine-infectious diseases and dermatology, respectively. Spurred by a generous lead gift from the Gilchrist Foundation, founded by the late Jocelyn Gilchrist, the Fureys embarked upon a mission to endow a professorship in community medicine in hopes that future generations of Northwestern physicians might touch innumerable lives through training in this important field. A landmark endowment, this professorship would be the first of its kind at Northwestern. | Andrew McKenna, friend of the Fureys and generous supporter of the professorship initiative who spoke at the recent reception, with Drs. In a recent letter to friends and patients, Drs. Furey shared, “We have come to realize that our greatest privilege as physicians is to be a few lines in the mostly-unwritten biographies of so many lives.” Drs. Furey recently gathered amidst their friends and colleagues—all of whom gave generously to recognize the couple for their clear dedication to patient care—to celebrate the impressive progress of their initiative to create the Nancy and Warren Furey Medical Education Professorship at the Feinberg School. The fund is continuously growing closer to its goal of $1 million for endowment, thanks to the generous gifts of Drs. Furey’s patients, friends, and colleagues, who share their insight into the importance of community medicine. Dr. Warren W. Furey provided a few remarks at the gathering, and sang "What A Wonderful World," which brought tears to the eyes of many in attendance.
