Feinberg School Awards 2010 Faculty Mentors of the YearOn Thursday, September 23, faculty, staff, students, and friends gathered at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Center to honor two Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine faculty members. The Faculty Mentor of the Year awards are presented by the Medical Faculty Council (MFC) on behalf of the Feinberg community, with support from donors Mr. Paul and Mrs. Frances Kent. | Dr. Shulman, Dr. Liu, Mrs. and Mr. Kent (l to r) |
Created in honor of Mr. Kent’s father, Dr. Geoffrey Kent (1914-2008), and his mentors, this annual award is a tremendous testament to Dr. Kent’s legacy as a talented physician, researcher, and teacher. The Kents are the sole supporters of this award, and also make possible the annual Tripartite Award. Kiang Liu, PhD, professor and associate chair for research in the Department of Preventive Medicine and professor in the Department of Medicine, was honored with the Basic Science Mentor of the Year award. He has mentored junior faculty and fellows at several institutions, including the Feinberg School, the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University. Through collaboration on research topics and hypotheses, assistance with data interpretation, and advice on manuscript preparation, Dr. Liu has guided countless individuals through their early careers. His former mentees have gone on to excel in prominent academic, clinical, and industrial positions. Stanford T. Shulman, MD, is Virginia H. Rogers Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, chairman of the Infection Control Committee, and director of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at Children’s Memorial Hospital. At this year’s reception, Dr. Shulman was honored with the Clinical Mentor of the Year award, adding to his breadth of accolades. His work with young physician-trainees and others in the early stages of their careers is felt across the Feinberg community. The MFC is comprised of representatives from each department at the Feinberg School. A particular focus of this group is the promotion of faculty mentoring within the University, toward which, they sponsor these annual awards. |
