Giving Back While Looking Forward Northwestern Surgical Associates renew their commitment to the Department of Surgery's residency program As faculty members in the Department of Surgery, Drs. Kevin Bethke, Wilson Hartz, Kyle Mueller, Steven Stryker, Mark Toyama, and Gerald Ujiki know first-hand the value of investing in the future of medicine. Together comprising Northwestern Surgical Associates (NSA), this group of talented clinical faculty members includes medical school alumni and graduates of the Department of Surgery's residency program. Collectively, they have recently declared a second generous commitment to support the Department of Surgery's residency program, advancing the training and research of the next generation of surgeons in a rapidly-evolving field. This April, Northwestern Surgical Associates pledged $60,000 to the NSA Resident Research Fund. In the face of uncertain economic times, Drs. Bethke, Hartz, Mueller, Stryker, Toyama, and Ujiki have inspired many with their dedication. "The continued allegiance of NSA is a tremendous testament to their generosity, foresight, and leadership within the Department of Surgery. By providing vital funds in support of resident research, these surgeons not only help bring the best to Northwestern, but also make sure our residents have the opportunity to contribute to new research discoveries," said J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, vice president for medical affairs and Lewis Landsberg Dean of the Feinberg School of Medicine.Already a highly-competitive training program, the surgical residency program at the Feinberg School of Medicine will benefit from the group's giving as it strives to acknowledge the complexity of the busy hospital environment, the realities of program accreditation requirements, and the relationship between all resident experiences and learning. According to Nathaniel Soper, MD, Loyal and Edith Davis Professor of Surgery and chair of the Department of Surgery, "The NSA Resident Research Fund will help us continue to attract the most gifted graduates to our program. I am grateful for my colleagues' dedication to the future of the department." By investing in such a program, Drs. Bethke, Hartz, Mueller, Stryker, Toyama, and Ujiki are giving back while looking forward to all that is possible for the next generation of surgeons at Northwestern.
