Friends of Megan, Inc. is a foundation comprised of the friends and family of Megan Ann Gaffin, a young woman whose life was cut tragically short by the devastation of cervical cancer. A lively and energetic person, Megan’s friends and family described her as someone who approached life with a sense of optimism and humor. Megan was diagnosed in December 2005 with an aggressive case of cervical cancer. Seeking out high quality medical care and advice, she came to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, where she was treated by Dr. Julian C. Schink in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. In August 2006, just before her 26th birthday, Megan Ann Gaffin passed away. As a tribute to Megan’s life, her friends and family organized Friends of Megan. After her obituary ran in the Chicago Tribune, Dr. Schink was informed by his colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology that there had been an increased number of calls from women asking to schedule pap smears. It was clear that Megan's story had motivated others to schedule their yearly exams. Friends of Megan, Inc.’s recent gift of $15,000 will support cervical cancer research at the Lurie Cancer Center and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
