Dr. and Mrs. Cohen

A Multidisciplinary Learning Opportunity

The Dr. Harry and Mitzie P. Cohen Lectureship in Anesthesiology and Obstetric Anesthesiology

On Friday, June 19, the Department of Anesthesiology hosted the Dr. Harry and Mitzie P. Cohen Lectureship in Anesthesiology and Obstetric Anesthesiology. Created by the Cohens in 2006, the lectureship also honors Dr. Edward Brunner, emeritus professor and former chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. This unique lectureship embraces multiple disciplines and annually attracts the interest of faculty members and residents-in-training in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology as well as anesthesiology.

Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1943, followed by a rotating internship at the University of Maryland Hospital. After years on academic medical faculties in New York and Miami, the Cohens moved to Chicago in 1981, where Dr. Cohen joined Northwestern University as professor and director of Anesthesia for Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1993, he retired as a full-time faculty member and was appointed to emeritus status.Held in the Feinberg Pavilion of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the 2009 lectureship featured a presentation by Joy L. Hawkins, MD, professor of anesthesiology, associate chair for academic affairs, and director of obstetric anesthesia at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.

Addressing more than 200 faculty and staff members, students, and researchers in attendance, Dr. Hawkins delivered a well-received talk on “Maternal Morbidity and Mortality—Anesthetic Causes.” While acknowledging that anesthesia is less likely to be the cause of maternal death than many other preventable factors, Dr. Hawkins discussed the relationships that exist between cause of death, the type of anesthetic, the type of obstetric procedure, and any associated maternal conditions in maternal mortalities.
