Annual Silent Auction Signals SpringOn April 17, medical students swapped their white coats for cocktail dresses and suits as they mingled with faculty, staff, friends, and family at the Feinberg School of Medicine’s fifth annual silent auction. Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and live performances by student groups at this special event supporting and celebrating the accomplishments of the school’s many student organizations. In addition to socializing and discovering more about each other outside of the academic environment, members of the Northwestern community bid on donated items ranging from an autographed baseball to a night at the Talbott Hotel. Among the most hotly contested items were a week’s stay at a Hilton Head resort, babysitting provided by students, and homemade cookies delivered every month for a year. The proceeds from the silent auction will be distributed among student organizations, from health clinics and cultural associations to community outreach programs. The only event of its kind, the silent auction is entirely organized by and in support of medical student groups. Beyond the opportunity to bid on desirable items, this year’s event was also an occasion for guests to recognize the dedication of students who regularly go above and beyond the demands of Feinberg’s rigorous academic schedule to help in the Chicago community. | Liz Groothuis, Amy Fruehwald, Manali Bhave, MD '11 |
Darren Boyd, first-year president of the student senate, acknowledged the importance of the event. "This year’s silent auction was a great success. While the fundraising aspect of the event is certainly important, I thought the real beauty of silent auction was that it brought the medical school community together for a common purpose. That willingness of students and student groups to participate is the real strength of the Feinberg School of Medicine, and that is what we’re celebrating through silent auction." |
