Welcoming Back Historians and Mentors

On June 5, Feinberg School of Medicine Dean J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, and Vice Dean Jeffrey Glassroth, MD, welcomed emeritus medical faculty members back to campus. The esteemed faculty members joined the deans for a breakfast buffet in the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Building before enjoying tours of three laboratories on the Chicago Campus.

The first of its kind at the medical school, the event was an effort to keep retired faculty connected to the school. The morning opened with a warm welcome from Dr. Glassroth. Encouraging the emeriti to re-engage with the medical school, he introduced his idea for a corps of emeriti medical faculty who could serve as mentors, preceptors, and group leaders for medical students.

Dean Jameson also shared his vision with the emeriti, reacquainting them with the medical school.  Elaborating on his vision of alignment, innovation, and impact, he described the medical school’s efforts to cultivate a culture of collaboration that encourages students and faculty to work at the interface of traditional areas of expertise in order to bring new perspectives to medicine that cannot be achieved by any single specialty.

Following remarks by Northwestern Emeriti Organization president and professor emeritus, Jack Snarr, MD, the faculty members divided into groups to take tours of two simulation-focused laboratories on campus.

Led by Carla Pugh, MD, assistant professor and director of the Northwestern Center for Advanced Surgical Education (N-CASE), part of the tour introduced the emeriti to N-CASE and offered them a hands-on look at Dr. Pugh’s innovative simulator models. Dr. Pugh described her broad interest in the use of technology for medical and surgical education and shared her breast and prostate exam simulators with the emeriti.

Under the guidance of Thomas Corbridge, MD, professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, the emeriti were also given a behind the scenes look at Cosmo, the interactive model “patient” used in the Patient Safety Simulator Center. With the help of two operators acting behind the scenes, Cosmo played the part of a patient admitted to the ICU with severe respiratory problems under the care of three residents and Dr. Corbridge. Emeriti were welcomed into the training room and invited to participate in the “patient’s” care.

The afternoon concluded with the emeritus faculty members back together for a final tour of the genomics core laboratory under the direction of Rex Chisholm, PhD, Dean for Research. Dr. Chisholm introduced the emeriti to NUgene, a major biobanking effort at Northwestern University.  He also took the opportunity to highlight the amazing technological advances that have propelled genomics research, and acknowledged the talented researchers on his team that “ask the right questions” and give meaning to his work.
