Annual Spring Fundraiser Brings Medical School Together

Students with Dean Landsberg and Janice FeinbergFeinberg School of Medicine students hosted a silent auction on April 12 to raise funds in support of student organizations. This annual spring fundraiser offered an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff of the medical school to gather in a social setting in support of a shared cause.

As the only event of its kind, the fundraiser is entirely organized by and in support of medical student groups. Raymond Curry, MD, Dean for Education, described the event as an opportunity to build rapport, saying “There is a tremendous amount of energy and commitment among the students in these groups. The goals of these organizations demonstrate their community support.”

From health clinics and cultural associations to community outreach programs, student organizations aim to build strong connections between the medical school and the people of Chicago. Dr. Curry also shared his thoughts on the importance of the fundraiser as a student-run initiative. “To give these organizations autonomy over how they raise and spend money is important in and of itself.”

Proceeds from the event reached more than $15,000, continuing the trend of raising more funds every year. The event also raised its highest ever amount of cash donations—a substantial charitable achievement.

“The silent auction gives both faculty and students a chance to interact and see each other as colleagues within the health profession.”  - Martin Pham

Not only a fundraising success, the auction was also an occasion to celebrate and strengthen support for student organizations and professional relationships between students and faculty.Indian Garba dancers at the silent auction

While bidding on items ranging from sporting event tickets to an exclusive dinner with Dean Landsberg, the approximately 300 guests were treated to entertainment from the diverse student body. Throughout the evening, attendees were entertained by student musicians and a group of traditional Indian Garba dancers in full regalia.

Martin Pham, first year president of the student senate, acknowledged the importance of the event as a fundraiser and professional opportunity. “Throughout our medical school career, the faculty-student relationship can be lost within the didactics of education,” he said. “The silent auction gives both faculty and students a chance to interact outside of that atmosphere, and instead, see each other as colleagues within the health profession.”
