GCRC Core Resources

Laboratory Resources

Located on the GCRC unit, the core laboratory facility comprises a 570-square-foot area for specimen processing and analytical work and a 65-square-foot walk-in cold room for assay incubation. Three full-time technologists staff the laboratory.

Accredited with CLIA, JCAHO and CAP, the GCRC's laboratory is authorized and equipped for the use of radioactive materials. The facility offers services for specimen processing, specimen storage and shipment, and clinical and research assays. Research assays initiated and certified in the core laboratory must also be approved by the Scientific Advisory Committee and are intended to support a research need for at least three GCRC investigators.

Specimen Processing

The core laboratory can perform minimal to complex specimen processing.

  •  single or multiple blood, serum, plasma, or urine aliquots
  •  custom-made laser-printed labels specific for each protocol generated in-house and pre-printed color-coded log numbers for easy identification
  •  access to 3 floor-model refrigerated centrifuges and 3 table-top centrifuges
  •  capability for DNA extraction using Puregene Kit
  •  capability for performing lymphocyte isolation

Specimen Storage

The core laboratory has access to an upright minus-30-degree Celsius refrigerator and two minus-70-degree Celsius freezers for short- or long-term specimen storage.

Specimen Shipment

The core laboratory has the capability to ship out ambient or frozen specimens to designated laboratories. A specimen shipment tracking mechanism is in place to ensure shipments are received on time.

Core Laboratory Assays

The GCRC core laboratory can provide stat or routine assays for clinical and research purposes.

Clinical Assays

  •  Chloride
  •   Glucose
  •  Osmolality
  •  Potassium
  •  Qualitative hCG
  •  Sodium

Research Assays

  •  Aldosterone
  •  C-Peptide
  •  D-Xylose
  •  Insulin
  •  Leptin
  •  Melatonin
  •  Spun Microhematocrit
  •  Plasma Renin Activity
  •  Testosterone
  •  Vasopressin
