These classes meet once a month. Patient, Physician & Society III: Professional PerspectivessThird-year students meet once a month on a Friday 3:30-5 p.m. from July to June. Sessions are primarily held in colleges of 44 M3 students for the first 30 minutes followed by small group discussions with 11 students per group for 60 minutes. Topics include: adapting to ward teams, virtue in medicine, student abuse, dealing with dying patients, stress management, geriatric care, palliative care, tribalism in medicine, and boundary issues, among others. The unit director is Greg Brisson, MD. If you would like to learn more about this unit you may reach him via e-mail at gbrisson@nmh.org. Advanced Physical DiagnosisThird-year students meet once a month on a Friday from 8:40-9:50 a.m. from July-June. Faculty work with about 8 M3 students for about 30 minutes in 2 sets. In the exam room, faculty will have a patient with a known disease and physical findings. Based on the patient's disease, the faculty preceptor can set up a plan for what the students should accomplish during the session (i.e., being able to distinguish between two systolic murmurs, or being able to detect a partial visual field defect). Then, either directed or undirected, allow the students to examine the appropriate part of the patient, making sure that they all "get it." The unit director is Toshi Uchida, MD. If you would like to learn more about this unit you may contact her via email at toshiko-uchida@northwestern.edu. M3 Medical Decision-Making/Evidence Based MedicineThird-year students, meet once a month on Friday 1:00-2:10 p.m., July to June.
