Full-time medical school faculty members may be nominated for appointment to the University’s Graduate School faculty by their department chair and the dean. While no absolute criteria exist for appointment to the Graduate School, the following are important considerations. The faculty member should be engaged in research and graduate teaching and preferably should hold the rank of assistant professor or above on a tenure track. Candidates should possess a thorough knowledge of graduate activities at Northwestern and the ability to train high-quality students. Faculty members associated with programs that have no substantial graduate-training component usually are excluded from membership in the Graduate School faculty, but exceptions can be made for selected faculty researchers in medical school clinical departments. A faculty member can supervise graduate research work without holding an appointment on the Graduate School faculty. In this case, however, the faculty member cannot serve as chair of the committee that must officially certify that a student candidate has fulfilled the degree requirements established by the Graduate School faculty. |
