The school encourages junior faculty members to seek guidance and assistance from their department to establish mentoring relationships. Mentoring by one or more senior individuals who serve as wise and trusted counselors and teachers can be a powerful force in the personal and professional development of a faculty member. A mentor can provide professional guidance through advocacy for the mentee and by assisting the mentee to develop career insight. A mentor can provide introductions into professional networks and societies and provide leads to professional opportunities as well as to individuals in other institutions. Faculty members at all career stages should participate in faculty development activities to improve their skills or acquire new skills in teaching, research, patient care, communication, and management. These activities can facilitate faculty career development. School policy calls for annual performance evaluation and counseling of full-time faculty members by their academic or clinical supervisor. This process usually involves self-reporting, goal setting, and counseling regarding career progression and departmental expectations for the faculty member. |
