Medical School Councils and Faculty Committees

The medical school has five governance councils and a number of committees, both standing and ad hoc, charged with review, planning, and advisory functions. The five governance councils include the Dean’s Council and four operational councils in the functional areas for which the school’s executive associate deans are responsible. The councils are responsible for setting direction, establishing priorities, and recommending policy, plans, and programs for the school.

The dean appoints members of the faculty to these councils and committees and may delegate this function to the executive associate deans. Membership on committees is an important aspect of the requirement that full-time faculty members provide service to the University. Part-time and contributed service faculty members also are encouraged to share in the work of the medical school committees when offered the opportunity. Service on committees is one of the criteria considered when a faculty member is evaluated for promotion. The diagram below illustrates the governance council organization.
