Specifically, muscle properties such as musculoskeletal architecture (e.g. muscle fascicle length, pennation angle, muscle thickness, and moment arm), fiber composition, and material properties, as well as motor unit recruitment have been shown to influence locomotor performance in animals, but the relationship between those variables are not well established for many human movements. Populations of great interest to me are individuals with neurological impairments such as cerebral palsy (CP), spinal cord injury (SCI), and stroke.

Using a variety of techniques such as ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, modeling, histochemistry, electromyography (EMG), wavelet analysis, and gait analysis, I aim to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of neuromuscular muscle function in these populations. This will form the basis for proposing clinical tools used to aid in injury prevention and mobility loss in older adults and to aid in diagnosing and implementing interventions for individuals with CP, stroke, and SCI.[Shorten text]
