Dr. Catherine Hunter was delighted to join the faculty at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern University in the summer of 2012.

Dr. Hunter is originally from Edinburgh, Scotland where she completed her undergraduate degree in Physiology. She received the national physiology prize and first class honors for her work. Dr. Catherine Hunter was delighted to join the faculty at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern University in the summer of 2012.

Dr. Hunter is originally from Edinburgh, Scotland where she completed her undergraduate degree in Physiology. She received the national physiology prize and first class honors for her work. After a summer research internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital she decided to pursue a medical degree from Cornell University. After medical school she completed her General Surgery training at Harbor-UCLA medical center in Los Angeles, and was awarded board certified in General Surgery in 2010. She completed her Pediatric Surgery Fellowship training at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where she gained expertise with all aspects of neonatal and pediatric surgery. She received advanced training in minimally invasive surgical techniques with particular expertise in both chest and abdominal disorders. She is board certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery.

Dr. Hunter continued to dedicate time to basic science research during her clinical training. Her area of research interest is necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a highly morbid intestinal disorder that typically afflicts premature infants. The role of bacteria and Cronobacter sakazakii in the pathogenesis of NEC is a particular area of interest. She is a primary investigator of basic science research at Northwestern University.[Shorten text]
