Dr. Zachary A. Smith is a fellowship trained, board certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery.

He has a strong interest and experience in the treatment of cervical spine disease and tumors of the spine. Dr. Zachary A. Smith is a fellowship trained, board certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery.

He has a strong interest and experience in the treatment of cervical spine disease and tumors of the spine. In addition, he is the principal investigator a NIH-funded prospective study (K23) that evaluates biomarkers of spinal injury in patients with cervical spine compression. This study is a collaboration between Northwestern Medicine, the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab and the Northwestern Neuroimaging Institute.

Dr. Smith graduated as a Presidential Scholar from Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH). He obtained his medical and neurosurgical training at UCLA and fellowship at Northwestern. He is the recipient of the CNS Spine Fellowship award and the AANS/CNS Spine Section Apfelbaum Awards. Dr. Smith has published greater than 200 combined peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and editorials. He has additionally presented > 100 combined talks and abstracts at national and international conferences. He has been an editor on two books that focused on minimally invasive spine techniques. He has published in multiple journals including Nature, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and the Journal of NeuroOncology. He is on the Editorial Board of both PlosOne (Public Library of Science) and Operative Neurosurgery. He has a developed interest in developing new minimally invasive techniques for advanced spinal disease. This includes both surgical treatments in the operating room as well as stereotactic radio-surgery and radiotherapy. Further, his research involves the study of spinal biomechanics,motion segments in the spine, and abnormal neck posture.[Shorten text]
