Educational Opportunities

Unique to our training program is the amount of time residents spend in the critical care setting: 8 months outside the ED. During these experiences, they participate in the care of patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Medicine Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. During these rotations, 3.5 months are spent as senior level residents supervising medical students, internal medicine residents, and junior emergency medicine residents at Northwestern and Stroger Hospitals. The amount of critical care experience, the diversity and number of patients, and the complexity in types of patients that residents are exposed to in various hospital settings ultimately make Northwestern graduates precious commodities once they finish their training. Residents also acquire a great deal of experience in pediatrics by rotating at Children's Memorial Hospital.

Efforts continue to improve the academic and clinical environment for the residents. 12,000 square feet of newly built office space is dedicated to educational and research endeavors. Multiple computer workstations, a residency office, a dedicated Chief Residents’ office, as well as Northwestern’s state-of-the-art library facilities all support and enrich the residents’ overall training experience.

An innovative leadership skills training program is now part of the formal didactic curriculum. This program, titled “The Academic Colleges of the Department of Emergency Medicine,” is the first of its kind in the nation. A “research college,” “administration/business college,” and “education college” have been created as three separate interest groups for faculty and residents. Physicians self-select membership to 1 of the 3 colleges based on scholarly interests and future career goals. The main goals of each college are to provide structured, faculty mentors to help residents design and execute scholarly projects under the umbrella of the selected college. These projects will result in publishable manuscripts co-authored by residents and faculty members. The experience and publications gained through this work will help to develop members’ leadership skills with respect to their future career niches; thus, helping to ease transitions to post-training positions.
