Diagnosis is rather straightforward.  Plain film x rays can help assess the extent of bone coverage by the remaining soft tissue and for associated foreign bodies, fractures, and intraarticular air.  Radiographs should also be obtained of the amputated part(s) to assess damage if reimplantation is a consideration.
