History and Physical Exam

History may reveal certain predisposing factors such as poor technique, poor footwear, sudden changes in training terrain or regimen, and high arches. A typical description is insidious onset of dull pain that began during activity and subsequently worsens to the degree that activity is prohibited.  Night pain is common.

Exam may reveal swelling, erythema, or point tenderness. However, there is often a lack of any abnormal findings.
