Visiting Student Elective
The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a 4-week visiting elective for fourth-year students attending other medical schools. Students who meet the general application criteria for the visiting student elective program at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine may be considered for the emergency medicine elective. We consider visiting applicants on a "first come, first served, space available" basis.
The clinical site for the emergency medicine visiting elective is Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Level 1 Trauma Center affiliated with Northwestern University. The Emergency Department serves a wide and varied population with a patient volume of 70,000+ per year.
One of the special opportunities available to visiting student rotators is participation in a high-fidelity simulator laboratory at Evanston Hospital. This laboratory with mannequins allows the student to learn the management of critically ill patients in the safe environment of the laboratory. The skills acquired in the simulator can then be applied in the real life clinical setting after having mastered them in a controlled and protected environment.
Prerequisites for the Emergency Medicine visiting elective are senior student status and completion of junior core clerkships in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and OB/Gyn. One letter of recommendation from an emergency medicine advisor or senior faculty who has supervised the student in a clinical setting is required.
