Mentoring Program
Dr. June McKoy and Dr. Melissa Simon are looking for students interested in cancer and elder research for the summer of 2012. Please see information and application for details!
Program Description
Purpose: to facilitate connections between students, faculty, and residents that will foster career explorations and development, mentorship, scholarship and collegiality.
Format: Physicians and residents who want to participate will submit a profile and CV to the Office of Diversity. Students interested in participating will select potential mentors and set up initial meetings and/or shadowing. Past programming involving mentorship has demonstrated that success of mentor/mentee relationships is largely based on investment from both parties. Therefore, we have adapted our program to be initiated by student interest and mentor interest in hopes that it will be more efficient and beneficial. In order to find optimal matches, students are encouraged to continue exploring fields and mentors through shadowing, lab visits, etc. When a student and mentor agree to work together, the student will be responsible for updating the mentor's profile page in the Office of Diversity to indicate that s/he already has a mentee.
Logistics: The Office of Diversity will facilitate mentor mixer events three times a year in early fall (August/September), winter (Dec/Jan), and spring (May). All mentors from the profile book, as well as those who have not yet enlisted, will be invited. Minority housestaff and minority students will also be invited to attend. The events will serve as social gatherings fostering community, high-yield opportunities to meet mentors and mentees, as well as celebrations of holidays and graduation. The mentoring events dovetail with traditional annual Office of Diversity gatherings such as the holiday party and graduation dinner.
Breakfast with a Mentor
It's really simple - you spend an hour with a mentor over a great meal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this one could be very useful for your career and personal development! We will have two mentor breakfast sessions for the 2010-2011 school year: September 1-October 31 and March 1-April 30. Students schedule the time, date and place. Choose from places nearby or on campus, within walking distance. Each mentor/student pair will be allotted up to $30 total for their meeting.
Step by step:
1) Student selects a mentor from the Office of Diversity Mentor Book and schedules the breakfast. Mentors not listed in the book must be cleared in advance with the Office of Diversity.
2) Student then informs the Office of Diversity of his/her chosen date to meet with the mentor and sets up reimbursement and funds logistics with the office.
3) Student has breakfast with the mentor and obtains an itemized receipt at the end of the meal.
4) Student brings the receipt to the Office of Diversity for reimbursement processing and fills out an evaluation form about their experience.
