Diversity at Northwestern

"I believe strongly that Northwestern's institutional responsibilities include creating an environment that welcomes students, faculty and staff of all races, nationalities and religions. In doing so, we offer our students the opportunity to learn in a diverse community, thereby preparing them better for their careers. This is particularly true in the 21st century, when the United States is becoming increasingly diverse and the working world increasingly globalized."   —President Bienen

Diversity and Excellence Go Hand in Hand at Feinberg School of Medicine

A diverse class is essential to the quality of education for every student at Feinberg, and to this end the Feinberg School of Medicine works to recruit students from all backgrounds and walks of life.  We recognize that diversity in today’s society is not mirrored in the physician workforce, and therefore focus our efforts on increasing membership in medicine from underrepresented groups.

Collaboration with Student Groups

Feinberg has many student groups with interests as diverse as our student body.  Latino Cultural Medical Association, Student National Medical Association, Queers & Allies, Jewish Medical Student Organization, Muslim Student Association, Asian Pacific American Student Association, South Asian Medical Student Association, are just a few.  Where possible, the OMCA supports meeting/conference attendance and student initiatives (such as noon hour seminars or lectures) that focus on and raise awareness about diversity, social justice, underserved communities, and health disparities. Students can apply for funds on a bi-yearly basis and are expected to contribute to diversity at Feinberg in return.

Latino Cultural Medical Association (LCMA)

LCMA members work closely with the OMCA.  This year student leaders hope to begin new education programs for high school students as well as a mentoring program for premed students at the undergraduate level.  They are also hosting a regional meeting at our campus in January of 2008 .  In addition to shared programming efforts, OMCA often utilizes LCMA members to assist with recruitment initiatives around the country.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA)

The OMCA works closely with SNMA to support their programming and initiatives.  Last year, student leaders worked with the OMCA to redesign the mentoring program to more accurately address student needs.  Each year the SNMA runs a Health Professions Exploration Program for high school students in the Chicago area.  The OMCA partners with SNMA to support HPREP, which begins in January and runs for six weeks.

Queers & Allies (Q&A)

The NUFSOM Queers & Allies (Q&A) promotes the acceptance of LGBT students, faculty, and staff through education and discussion of LGBT issues and rights. In addition to being an educational and social resource, Q&A promotes a safe space for the Feinberg LGBT community as an alliance of LGBT-friendly students, faculty, and staff.

To contact Q&A email Matt (president 07-08) or email Dennis (treasurer 07-08).

Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association

(APAMSA) strives to serve the student body in four different capacities: cultural, social, educational, and philanthropy. The services are especially focused for Asian American medical students, providing an avenue where Asian American issues and concerns may be addressed.

Cultural - the organization plans an International Film Festival and annual celebrations for special holidays, such as the Lunar New Year or the Moon Festival.
Social - APAMSA organizes outings to Asian American Jazz Festival, Dim Sum Runs to Chinatown, and periodic gatherings for Asian American medical students.
Educational - APAMSA invites speakers to Northwestern to discuss Asian American related medical issues and assists the Immigrant/Refugee Area Health Education Center in a Mentorship Program for high school students.
Philanthropy - APAMSA organizes an annual bone marrow drive, assists in flu shot immunization, and is dedicated to fighting the hepatits B cycle.

APAMSA continues to tailor existing projects as well as create new ones according to the current expectations and needs its members, who are dedicated to both local and national medical issues in the Asian American community.
