Dr. Carla Pugh, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, was the keynote speaker for students at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences for the annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day. In addition to visiting their campus and spending time with students, Dr. Pugh also hosted five students on campus to shadow her for a day. The students engaged in several hands-on activities including learning to suture and performing several procedures with medical simulation equipment. Dr. Pugh demonstrated her patented simulation sensor technology as the students delivered babies and performed intubation on the medical models. To see a PDF brochure with photos, click here. You can see the story about Groundhog Day with Dr. Pugh featured on the CPS Right Now! show on cable channel 49, the Chicago Works Station. It airs at 5:30 pm this week through March 14, 2008. "I believe the time has now come for our university to end the use of our Native American nickname. As an institution sharing a community with the Cherokee Nation and with a student population that is nearly 30 percent American Indian, we know all too well the economic, health care, and educational challenges that face many American Indians, and we must be committed to the dialogue and education that will end these inequities. We should no longer be using names and symbols that encourage biases and prejudices..." | To apply for funding for your group, meeting or initiative please fill out the Student Funds Request Form and submit to our office at least two weeks in advance.
