Diversity is about the acceptance and respect of an individual and all the dimensions that make them a unique individual: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, marital status, language, education, age, physical abilities, religious and political beliefs, and more.

Inclusion is working to ensure that the broad range of perspectives are integrated holistically into the existing culture. It is about a community or institution creating an environment where the individual can thrive and be valued for their unique perspective. Not only are all individuals welcome, but they are encouraged to use those elements of their individuality to shape the environment.

Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education

A continued development of critical thinking skills is a central value of a college education. Diversity among faculty, staff, and students is critical to this value, as a diverse, inclusive campus increases the individual student’s opportunity to hear perspectives different from their own. Nurturing an environment where assumptions and ideas are challenged and students are encouraged to be comfortable with new ways of thinking, seeing, and communicating is essential to critical thought.

Embracing diversity and inclusion is especially crucial to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine due to the incredibly diverse landscape in which we train. As a medical school embedded within one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States, Feinberg aspires to be a leader in academic medical diversity and inclusion initiatives and practices.

Diversity and Inclusion in Medicine

Medicine is a field in which providers are often called upon to make quick, yet difficult decisions for a large and diverse group of people. The conclusions made by these care providers often need to be based on incomplete data and assumptions. While it is not purposeful on behalf of the provider, the result can alienate the individual patient, leaving them with substandard care for their needs and lesser health outcomes. 

Our office believes that providing great, comprehensive care requires, whenever possible, taking to the time to serve the individual with respect by considering the individual patient’s needs, wants, abilities, and challenges.
