Robert B. Nadler, MD

Associate Professor

Dr. Nadler, Associate Professor of Urology and Head of the Section of Endourology, Laparoscopy, and Stone Disease, joined the Department of Urology in January 1996. During his residency training at Barnes Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Nadler was twice named outstanding resident by the faculty and was awarded both an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship and an American Foundation of Urologic Disease National Kidney Foundation Fellowship during his research year. After residency, he was appointed to the faculty of the Division of Urology at Barnes Hospital/Washington University, where he concentrated on minimally invasive treatment for kidney stones, kidney tumors, and prostate cancer.

Dr. Nadler's specific areas of interest currently include laparoscopic urology, where he is concentrating his efforts on laparoscopic nephrectomy for benign and malignant disease. Specifically, he is developing new renal preserving laparoscopic techniques which utilize cryosurgery (freezing of tumors) and radiofrequency ablation (heating of tumors) to treat small solid kidney tumors, as well as laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. He is also utilizing his laparoscopic skills in combination with his experience in open prostate surgery to perfect the new technique of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

Dr. Nadler is also experienced in minimally invasive endoscopic techniques (percutaneous nephrolithotomy, ureteroscopy, and laser lithotripsy) to treat kidney and ureteral stones, strictures, and tumors. He is Director of the Kidney Stone Center and coordinates metabolic stone evaluations (24-hour blood and urine tests) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Finally, Dr. Nadler (in conjunction with Dr. Anthony Schaeffer) has an NIH grant to study prostatitis. Together, Drs. Nadler and Schaeffer are looking at new techniques to diagnose (cytokine analysis) and treat (biofeedback, microwave thermotherapy, laparoscopy) prostatitis.
