Infections/ Inflammation/ Pelvic Pain
The Department of Urology has a long-standing history of excellence in the diagnosis and management of patients with infectious diseases including bacterial cystitis, interstitial cystitis, and prostatitis.
Clinical and basic research is being conducted in each of these areas with the intent of providing optimal, state-of-the-art assessment and care.
Clinical and basic research protocols are directed by Dr. Schaeffer and implemented by the clinical research staff (headed by Darlene Marko, RN).
Current studies include the National Institutes of Health Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain (MAPP). This study was initiated in 2010 and was designed to evaluate and monitor patients with this syndrome over time. Further information about the study and trials can be obtained from the nurse coordinator at (312) 908-7022 or d-marko@northwestern.edu.
