Dr Small awarded FASTROOctober 12, 2011 Dr. William Small, Jr. received his Fellow of ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology) designation on October 4th at a special ceremony during society's 53rd Annual Meeting be held recently at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Fla. "ASTRO Fellows are some of the most revered and accomplished members of the radiation oncology community and receiving this distinction is a great honor for them," Leonard Gunderson, MD, MS, FASTRO, ASTRO President and Emeritus Professor and Consultant in Radiation Oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, said. "Congratulations to this year's class." Members of ASTRO are eligible to become a Fellow if they have been part of the Society for at least 15 years, have given significant service to ASTRO and have made a significant contribution to the field of radiation oncology. The primary pathways to becoming a Fellow are excellence in research, patient care, education and leadership/service. The Society values contributions to all four areas; however, each nominee needed to have a truly outstanding contribution to at least one of the pathways to be named a Fellow. The nominations were reviewed by the nine-member Fellows Selection Committee who made recommendations to the ASTRO Board of Directors. Dr. Minesh Mehta, MD will join the Department of Radiation Oncology as Professor, Radiation Oncology on October 15. Dr. Mehta comes to Northwestern from the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health, where he was most recently a Professor in the Department of Human Oncology. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) since 2006 and Chair of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) Brain Tumor Committee since 1998. From 1997 to 2001, he served as an ad- hoc member of the FDA's Technology Assessment Committee and from 2001 to 2005, he served on and eventually chaired the FDA Radiological Devices Panel. He has published extensively, focusing in the areas of radiation therapy and translational and clinical cancer research. Dr. Mehta brings expertise in the treatment of both lung and brain tumors and will work with colleagues in Thoracic Surgery and Neuro-Oncology to build patient-focused, multi-disciplinary teams that provide world-class care. Dr. Woloschak receives NIH grant for NanoprobeA grant in the amount of $2.9M from a high-end instrumentation (HEI) program at NIH will fund the purchase and construction of an x-ray nanoscope (20nm resolution) for detection of metals (including nanoparticles) in cells and tissues. |
