Dr. Charlesnika Evans was one of 96 researchers awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by President Obama on July 23, 2012. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. It is given by a group of federal agencies and departments, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, for which Dr. Evans works at the Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital, in addition to her duties at Northwestern. Dr. Evans’s work focuses on the secondary complications of persons with spinal cord injury and disorder (SCI&D) and women with HIV. Her major research interests include the epidemiology of infectious diseases (particularly healthcare associated infections) and outcomes as related to these infections, antimicrobial prescribing and its effects on patient outcomes, and uptake of influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccinations.
Dr. Rahul Khare was invited to be a recurrent host on Chicago's own Eight Forty-eight on WBEZ. Here, Dr. Khare discusses patient-physician relationships and the interesting effects of the internet on the healthcare system:

The Joint Activity/Dietary Venture (Joint ADventure) is a pilot study of a workplace-based behavioral intervention designed to encourage participants to become more physically active and to lose weight. Researchers from Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago have begun recruiting overweight or obese workers with knee symptoms at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Dr. Chang is the principal investigator. Co-investigators include Drs. Linda Ehrlich-Jones and Dorothy Dunlop.
Dr. Charlesnika Evans received renewed funding (2012) for a study entitled “Women's Interagency HIV study (WIHS) Consortium/Epidemiology and Analytic Support sub-contract” from the Hektoen Institute and NIH NIAIDS. The goal of this subcontract is to provide epidemiologic and analytic support for the Chicago WIHS consortium investigators in evaluating a longitudinal cohort of women with or at-risk for HIV. Dr. Evans is the principal investigator for this project.
Dr. Charlesnika Evans received new funding (2012-2013) for a study entitled “Examining telehealth applications for evaluation of mild traumatic brain injury” from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Health Services Research & Development, Quality Enhancement Initiative. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the Department of Veterans Affairs comprehensive TBI evaluation administered through telehealth. Dr. Evans is a co-investigator for this project; Dr. Bridget Smith is the principal investigator.
Dr. Sherri LaVela received funding (2012-2013) for a research study entitled “Current Weight Management Practices for Veterans with SCI/D across the VA System of Care.” The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of current weight management practices among Veterans with chronic SCI/D. Dr. LaVela is the principal investigator for this project.
Dr. Min-Woong Sohn received new funding (2012-2016) for a study entitled “Comparative Effectiveness of Dynamic Patterns of Glucose Lowering Therapies” from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The goal of this project is to examine effectiveness of multiple drug regimens for short- and long-term outcomes of patients with Type II diabetes. Dr. Sohn is a co-investigator for this project.
