The Center has focused on creating patient education programs that provide clear and consistent messages to facilitate communication and decision making during medical encounters.  All programs are developed with input from patients and physicians, and tested to ensure effectiveness.
In 2004, Dr. Makoul received a grant from the American Cancer Society - Illinois Division to develop and test a multimedia Patient Education Program / Programa Educativo para Pacientes (PEP) on colorectal cancer screening, designed especially for Hispanic patients.




In 2005, Dr. Makoul received a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to develop multimedia tools designed to facilitate caring communication for patients with breast cancer. This project integrates patient, family member, and healthcare provider perspectives through the trajectory of breast cancer treatment.




In 2005, Dr. Makoul received a grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop and test practical, office-based, computer-assisted counseling tools designed to help patients make an informed decision about participating in colorectal cancer screening, and work with their primary care physician to select a screening test.




Dr. Cameron received a K01 Career Development Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2004 – 2007) to develop and test a multimedia influenza prevention program aimed at reducing racial disparities in the uptake of the influenza vaccination, designed specifically for African American seniors.




Dr. Wolf received a K01 Career Development Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2004 – 2007) to develop and evaluate materials that target education and empowerment messages to inner-city adults with asthma or caregivers to affected children to 'prime' these individuals to maximize their benefit from asthma self-management programs.



In 2005, CCM and the Division of General Internal Medicine received funding from the Northwestern Memorial Foundation to develop and test a multimedia educational program on diabetes type II. The program focuses on presenting information for newly and previously diagnosed patients.
