Current Research

Dr. Edwards is the founder and Director of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program at Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. Her current research interests include:

  • Vitamin D and its effects on bone, and neuromuscular performance. 
  • Identification of high-risk individuals for hip fractures
  • The relationship between systemic inflammation, bone loss, sarcopenia and fractures. 
  • Solid organ transplants and immuno-suppressant action on bone mass and fracture risk. 
  • Gait and balance disorders in older adults. 
  • Adverse effects of bisphosphonates on bone and renal function in multiple myeloma (RADAR project)
  • Prevalence of secondary factors for bone loss in fractures subjects
  • Health services research :  1.Women’s attitudes toward osteoporosis and fractures
                                            
    2.  Post fracture care, relevance of education and bone density testing
                                            3.  Development of an Emergency Department intervention for fragility fractures

Dr. Edwards is the recipient of an NIH minority supplement award in 2002, IDPH awards in 1999 and 2001, and a Geriatric Academic Career development Award (GACA) in 2004.
