Osteoporosis Information

Osteoporosis, the most common bone disease in humans, is a condition in which there is a weakening of the skeleton due to loss of bone mass and deterioration of the internal architecture of bone. The clinical consequence of this disease is an increased susceptibility of the bone to fracture resulting after minimal or even no trauma. The disease is progressive, and the resulting fractures of the hip, spine or wrist can instantly turn an active life into one of disability and dependence.

"Bone Health and Osteoporosis: A Report of the Surgeon General" is a speech presented by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, on October 14, 2004.
