CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER › During the 2003-04 academic year, Mary J.C. Hendrix, PhD, officially assumed her position as president and scientific director of Children’s Memorial Research Center. Philip M. Iannaccone, MD, PhD, George M. Eisenberg Professor of Developmental Pediatrics and director of developmental biology, was appointed deputy director for basic research. Deputy director for clinical research is Leon G. Epstein, MD, head of neurology at Children’s Memorial and associate program director for pediatrics of the General Clinical Research Center at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. In addition, Constantine Mavroudis, MD, was named surgeon-in-chief and surgery department head. Professor of surgery
at the Feinberg School, he has been a member of the Children’s Memorial staff since 1989 and continues as head of
cardiovascular-thoracic surgery at the hospital. › In 2004 the medical center’s Board of Directors instructed the hospital management to develop a plan to replace the inpatient facility, given constraints posed by physical space and the age of the present facility.
EVANSTON NORTHWESTERN HEALTHCARE › Among multispecialty independent research hospitals that receive funding from the National Institutes of Health, ENH ranks 12th in the nation. And nearly 30 of ENH’s researchers have been awarded NIH grants of $1 million or more. Total annualized extramural funding for research now exceeds $29 million. › This year, a team led by Pablo V. Gejman, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, discovered a gene associated with susceptibility to schizophrenia. This work could lead to better pharmacological treatment and ultimately prevention of this disorder. A $35 million electronic patient record system is now fully operational in ENH’s three hospitals and 65 medical offices and outpatient facilities. ENH’s hospitals are the only ones in Illinois that have fully implemented the quality and safety practices recommended by the Leapfrog Group, an industry watchdog organization dedicated to improving hospital quality. ENH has also received the prestigious Davies Award of Excellence from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. In addition, ENH has recently completed a three-year, $350 million capital project that has brought new space and capabilities to its three hospitals. This year, the Charles R. Walgreen Jr. Building opened on the Evanston campus, providing additional research and faculty office space.
NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL › The last
academic year was significant for Northwestern Memorial
Hospital (NMH). Considerable progress was made in planning for the new Prentice Women’s Hospital scheduled to
open in 2007. The new Northwestern Cardiovascular Institute was launched under the codirectorship of Robert O. Bonow, MD, Max and Lilly Goldberg Distinguished Professor and chief of cardiology, and renowned heart surgeon Patrick M. McCarthy, MD, professor of surgery, who joined Northwestern this year. › Northwestern Memorial Foundation provided more than $30 million in grants for hospital programs, research, education, and outreach, including an important study under way on genetic carrier screening. The hospital also participated in 1,300 clinical trials. › Working closely with medical school leadership, the hospital made a $70 million commitment to the development of clinical and research programs. The first $30 million has been transferred to the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation (NMFF) to support patient safety initiatives, improvements to clinical programs and patient access, and program enhancement. The remaining $40 million, to be paid to NMFF during the next five years, will support strategic clinical program development, medical education and research, quality and patient safety initiatives, and community service initiatives. › For 10 consecutive years, Chicagoans have named NMH their most preferred hospital in the National Research Corporation survey of consumers.
REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO › The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), the nation’s first freestanding rehabilitation hospital, was founded in 1954 to help war veterans with disabling injuries return to productive, independent, and fulfilling lives. Since then, RIC has relentlessly pursued its mission of providing healing and hope, helping people of all ages achieve the best life possible. This dedication to excellence has earned RIC the ranking of “Best Rehabilitation Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991, the Hospital of Choice Award from the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers, and worldwide recognition as the leader in its field. › The use of a robot to help people with paralysis learn to walk again and the development of the world’s first truly bionic arm are just two examples of RIC’s recent scientific breakthroughs, while on a broader scale, RIC is the only federally designated Stroke Rehabilitation and Research Center in the country. RIC is the center of the most advanced rehabilitation care anywhere. It has also advanced the field of rehabilitation by providing care in different settings, including day rehabilitation and outpatient centers.
JESSE BROWN VA MEDICAL CENTER › The VA Lakeside Clinic continues to provide multispecialty outpatient care following the transfer of inpatient services to the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center’s West Side facility in August 2003. The Lakeside property was offered to developers through an enhanced use lease, and NMH submitted a bid on behalf of itself and RIC to acquire the land for much needed clinical expansion. › The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center strongly values its long affiliation with Northwestern University and continues to work with the Feinberg School to ensure they will continue to maintain a full partnership in the Lakeside Clinic and its main campus at 820 South Damen Avenue. At West Side, 83 Northwestern residents work side by side with residents from the University of Illinois at Chicago. A shuttle service provides transportation for Northwestern students, residents and faculty members between the Chicago campus and the West Side campus, where a new 200-bed inpatient facility is expected to open in spring 2007.
NORTHWESTERN MEDICAL FACULTY FOUNDATION › The Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation (NMFF) is the Feinberg School’s principal full-time faculty group practice. This year NMFF patient encounters increased to more than 500,000 and its physician members grew to more than 530. NMFF revenue continues to support faculty salaries, and 5 percent of its clinical revenue goes to the medical school’s Research and Education Fund. Departments achieving budget targets transferred an additional 3 percent for academic programs, recruitment, and space buildouts. › During the year, NMFF received a $30 million strategic investment grant from Northwestern Memorial HealthCare to support practice and program development, patient safety and quality of care initiatives, research, and education. In addition, NMFF worked closely with Northwestern Memorial
Hospital to develop a program that began November 1 to jointly obtain professional liability insurance.
