As I reflect upon the events of last year, several stand out as particularly significant in helping the Feinberg School of Medicine stay on course in meeting its goal of preeminence. These include:
welcoming new leaders such as Ed Applebaum as chair of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery, Sherman Elias as chair of obstetrics and gynecology, Eric Russell as chair of radiology, and Todd Kuiken as the associate dean for hospital academic affairs at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Recruiting top-notch leaders is essential to help shape and carry out the Feinberg School’s vision.
opening new clinical facilities for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. The beautiful surroundings of the 21st floor of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation will complement the expert care our faculty members provide to cancer patients.
revamping the school’s Web site. Electronic communication is but one vehicle for the school to stay in touch with its myriad stakeholders and recruit students and faculty and staff members.
enhancing recruiting efforts. A new model of recruiting multiple research faculty members has shown initial success and holds great promise. Augmenting traditional departmental recruiting, this involves representatives from several departments looking for the best candidates in a particular discipline.
creating the Office of Minority and Cultural Affairs, headed by John Franklin. This office is spearheading efforts to improve cultural diversity and minority recruitment.
seeing Campaign Northwestern end successfully. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, the Feinberg School exceeded its goals in this University-wide fund-raising campaign. The $522.8 million raised is essential to help the school stay on course.
