Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) is a nationally-recognized medical center with 1571 Medical Staff and 873 beds in  the Feinberg Pavilion, Prentice Women's Hospital and the Stone Institute of Psychiatry. The Feinberg Pavilion is the primary teaching hospital for anesthesiology residents. Northwestern Memorial is the only hospital serving the downtown area with a Level 1 Trauma Center.

The Department of Anesthesiology provides care for more than 28,000 patients per year. In addition, trauma care numbers have increased 20-25 percent since 2004. Residents are exposed to all the traditional subspecialties of anesthesiology, including cardiothoracic, transplantation, trauma, obstetric, regional (orthopedics), neurosurgical, ambulatory, acute and chronic pain medicine and critical care medicine. NMH has distinguished itself as one of the premier centers in the country for teaching major conduction blockade (central neuraxial and peripheral plexus anesthesia). In 2005, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognized NMH's cardiac care service as one of 173 in the nation for top performance by the "Get with the Guidelines program.

Based on the results from the 2008 National Research Corporation's annual survey, consumers in the eight-county Chicago region ranked NMH, for the 14th consecutive year, the ”most preferred” hospital. From the same survey, the hospital received its fourth consecutive “Consumer Choice” award for having the best doctors, best nurses, best overall quality and best image and reputation. Similary, in recognition of its efforts to focus on quality improvement, Leapfrog Group designated NMH as one of 59 "Top Hospitals" in the U.S. The list is based on the Leapfrog Quality and Patient Safety Survey, a rating system that examined data about safe practices from more than 1,200 hospitals nationwide. In July 2006, NMH earned Magnet status for its excellence in nursing care. Only 206 healthcare organizations in the country, of which 33 are academic medical centers, hold this designation.

NMH ranked among America's top 50 hospitals in 10 of 16 medical specialties surveyed by US News & World Report, including cardiovascular, cancer, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gynecology, urology, gastroenterology, kidney, and ear-nose-throat. In addition, the hospital's investment in state-of-the-art technology to support medical care was recognized for the sixth year in a row with a "Most-Wired" designation by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. NMH remains one of only five healthcare organizations in the country to maintain the highest AA+ bond rating from Standard & Poor’s.
