Greetings from the Department Chair,
M. Christine Stock, MD, FCCP, FCCM

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine (NUFSM). Our Department offers outstanding advanced and categorical residency training programs. Our residents gain clinical experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the new Prentice Women's Hospital, and Children's Memorial Hospital,
which although currently located 3 miles northwest of NUFSM, is being built adjacent to Prentice Women's Hospital. We look forward to the opening of the new Children's Memorial Hospital in 2012 when residents who match in our program will participate in the transition and train in the new, state-of-the-art medical facility...read further

Greetings from the Residency Program Director,
John Sullivan, MD, MBA

I am proud to be a part of a team of dedicated physicians and educators who have built a premier anesthesia training program at Northwestern University. We are delighted that you are interested in our residency. It will be evident when you visit us that we have thoughtfully constructed a graduate medical education program that will prepare you to become an accomplished anesthesiologist. The specific elements of anesthesia residency at
Northwestern include a clinical caseload that is superb in both volume and complexity and institutional resources to support a thorough, structured didactic program. We are constantly striving to improve the delivery of anesthetic care and invest in innovative educational processes. Most importantly, though, we promote a departmental culture that reflects our passion about developing people; we recognize that our residents are our most valuable assets and we manage our organization accordingly...read further

Greetings from the Chief Resident,
Kristin Chenault, MD

Why Choose Northwestern? When I was in your shoes and navigating the Match process, there were many attributes that I looked for in various programs.  But I’d like to share with you my “Big Three” and why Northwestern was the best fit for me. 1.  Great clinical training: This probably seems obvious, and that’s because it is.  Residency is the time in your career to see as much pathology as possible, as many complications as possible, and perform anesthesia for as many big cases as possible.

With Northwestern being a tertiary care center, many of our patients are referred here from outlying hospitals.  Because of that, we take care of Chicagoland patients with some of the most complicated and complex pathology in the area.  Whether the patient has end stage liver disease from primary biliary cirrhosis and is presenting for liver transplant or a complex AVM in the brain which needs resection, as a resident you will be involved in their surgical care.  On your pediatrics rotation, you will care for premature infants who weigh less that 2 kilos.  You will care for patients with Treacher Collins syndrome who are known difficult airways...read further

Greetings from the Chief Resident,
Laurie Chalifoux, MD

When I was looking for a residency program 4 years ago, I had several priorities.  I wanted a strong clinical experience in an environment where I could grow and mature intellectually, personally and creatively. Additionally, I wanted to be surrounded by supportive, motivated people with similar goals. I have been pleased to find this and more during my years in the Northwestern Anesthesia program. I will start with the obvious: Northwestern's excellence in clinical teaching. This should be the cornerstone of your decision process

in picking a residency. After all, we want to be confident, skilled consultants in our chosen field after graduation. Thanks to Northwestern's location in a large city, our high case volume and multitude of specialties, you will leave this program ready to tackle almost anything! Learning occurs in many venues.  Well organized morning conferences concentrate on concise topics which help in preparation for written boards. Mock oral exams give residents the chance to polish verbal skills in a safe yet challenging venue...read further
