Why did I come to Northwestern? Where do I begin? My husband and I went through the "Couples Match," so we applied to many programs in very large cities. After my interview at Northwestern, however, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. This was the one place where I actually felt that the residents, although they worked hard, really enjoyed what they did, got along with each other, were happy with the educational program, the attendings, and were confident in their skills as anesthesiologists (and it was in downtown Chicago so I knew I could window-shop on the way to work every day). I have not been let down. I do work hard and put in many hours - this is a very busy hospital - but most importantly, I enjoy what I do. When I get up in the morning I look forward to coming to work. (If you've ever had a job that you have dreaded going to, you know what I mean...). I like all of my fellow residents, and have even developed some very close friendships along the way. In addition to the large clinical volume, frequent teaching by the faculty, the patient simulator sessions with Cosmo, and the countless other didactic lectures, I feel that my training at Northwestern is exceptional. When I am finished in 2 years, I know that I will be a well-trained anesthesiologist, who, has not only read about the rare complications that can happen while under anesthesia, but has experienced them first-hand. Living in Chicago for the past 2 years has been wonderful. Despite my busy schedule, I have been able to enjoy many of the things the city has to offer, like museums, awesome restaurants (you say you like cuisine from Zimbabwe? We probably have it!), theatre, shopping, an 18-mile bike/running/roller-blading path along the Lakefront, golf, and countless other activities. What other city has a beach just steps away from a major freeway AND skyscrapers? It's a beautiful place to live. One of the best questions you can ask residents as you begin your interviewing is: "If you had the chance to do it all over, would you come here again to train?" Would I?? Yes. Definitely. Good luck! Please email me with any questions. I'd love to chat! Sincerely, |
