Learning Objectives: Wyndham Lathem, PhD: Attendees will learn the clinical symptoms, modes of transmission, and virulence strategies associated with the human pathogen Yersinia pestis and will explore the mechanisms by which this bacterium evolved to cause the various disease manifestations known collectively as the plague. Herbert Meltzer, MD: This talk will make schizophrenia and related psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder and depression with psychotic features, understandable as part of a spectrum of genetically and experientially caused brain disorders. The advances in the pharmacologic and psychoeducational treatment of schizophrenia of the last 25 years and the new treatments that are being developed at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and elsewhere will be discussed. Societal (e.g. stigma) and economic issues (industry, government. and university) which affect progress in this area will be considered, along with how Northwestern University and the Feinberg School of Medicine are addressing them. Stephen Miller, PhD: Understand the mechanisms by which immune tolerance and immune suppression regulate immune responses in autoimmune disease and allergy. C.
