Galter Health Sciences LibraryLibrary Services for AlumniJames Shedlock, AMLS, AHIP, FMLA Director Galter Health Sciences Library The Galter Health Sciences Library is your one-stop portal to many of the same library services and resources you had access to before you graduated from Northwestern. Because of their proximity to campus, graduates in the Chicagoland area are in the best position to utilize the library’s information and research services on site. However, with ubiquitous Internet access, many of the Galter Library’s online services are available to medical school alums around the globe! The vision of the Galter Library is to be anywhere our users want us to be: in the professional's office, in the laboratory, or at home. You can access the Galter Library at www.galter.northwestern.edu .The Alumni Gateway page details the services and resources available to alumni. Stop by online and find out how we can keep you informed and connected with the following services:
Literature Search Services: All physicians are familiar with MEDLINE, the world's premier database for health sciences literature, and many physicians do their own MEDLINE searching through local arrangements. Galter librarians offer their expertise in MEDLINE and other database searching to complement your preliminary, online research. In addition, Galter librarians can access several other databases in the biomedical and social sciences to provide additional, comprehensive results to your literature research. Search fees are competitive and are based on time spent searching and formatting the results for distribution. More accurate estimates can be made for specific search topics at the time of your initial request.
Document Delivery Services: The Galter Library staff offers document delivery services to alumni interested in taking advantage of the valuable Northwestern collections as well as our access to other library collections through interlibrary loan. If a journal is not available to you locally, or your local library cannot obtain a copy of what you seek, consider checking the Galter collection. The document delivery service is offered through Loansome Doc and electronic copies of articles are provided for $15 per item.
If you visit the library in person, you are welcome to purchase a copy/printing card and make copies of items in-house. If you have any questions, please contact the Circulation Desk at (312) 503-8127.
Research Services: Stuck with a difficult reference problem? Unsure where to start your research? Consider asking for research assistance from the Galter Library. Librarians will utilize the tools and resources here at the Galter Library, in the other Northwestern libraries, or resources available on the Internet. Often, librarians will resort to manual searching and verification, especially for historical questions for which there is no online resource to search. Such manual searching is usually the case for research involving the history of the Medical School, its faculty, staff, and students. In-depth or time-consuming research may result in fees. Contact the library for details.
Electronic Resources: Your primary e-resources are NUcat, the library's online catalog of local Northwestern holdings; PubMed, the free MEDLINE service from the National Library of Medicine; many other free databases; and electronic reference tools organized to assist the busy health care professional. Because of licensing agreements, the library is unable to provide remote access to subscribed online journals, books, and databases. The Alumni Gateway lists several portals for free online journals and books. Contact Information: You can reach the library staff in a number of ways.
