Diversity

Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine highly values and recognizes the importance of our diverse student, faculty, and staff community.  In addition to an underrepresented in medicine student population of 14 percent, our community reflects a wide range of diversity in geography, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.

A number of student organizations are committed to exploring diversity, providing education and information on health disparities, discussing perspectives of patients from varied cultural backgrounds, and offering social opportunities to their members. Included in these organizations are the: American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Latino Cultural Medical Association (LCMA), and South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA).

The Office of Minority and Cultural Affairs (OMCA) strives to nurture Feinberg's commitment to diversity through cultural competency course materials, student advocacy and support outreach, educational and career development programs, and mentoring and advising activities.  Dr. John Franklin, Associate Dean of Minority and Cultural Affairs and Associate Professor of Psychiatry, oversees the Office and its initiatives. The OMCA is a resource for all Feinberg students in their exploration of the relationship between diversity, their medical education, and their life.
