Under the auspices of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, the medical school maintains close affiliations with five independent hospitals: Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), located on our campus, is the level -1 trauma center for downtown Chicago and has been designated the "most preferred hospital" in market research in the 8-county Chicago area for over a decade. NMH has recently rebuilt and opened a new Prentice Women's Hospital, a leader in providing care for women through all stages of their life. This innovative healthcare facility, located next to the Feinberg School, combines state-of-the-art clinical care with research dedicated exclusively to women's health issues. Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, also located on our campus, has been recognized as the "best rehabilitation hospital" every year since 1991. Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, 3 miles southwest in Chicago's West Side neighborhood, provides care to approximately 62,000 veterans throughout the region. Its VA Lakeside Clinic is located on our campus. Children's Memorial Hospital, 3 miles north in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, is a national leader in pediatric care, was the first children's hospital in the U.S., and has one of only a few free-standing pediatric research centers in the country. Evanston Northwestern Healthcare includes Evanston Hospital, in the suburb of Evanston, just 12 miles north of Chicago as well as Glenbrook and Highland Park Hospitals, both located in the north suburbs. Evanston Hospital is a level-1 trauma center that also is a leader in cancer and cardiac care.
