Research TrainingThe Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) offers its students the opportunity to conduct research during the summer after their M1 year. The Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) educates FSM students in the skills required for biomedical and clinical research. Students in the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) are also encouraged to apply. The three-month summer break after the first year is an optimal time for medical students to engage in their research experience. Opportunities to engage in research with medical school faculty members may be identified through the Medical Student Summer Research Committee, or through faculty who have interests in mentoring students. An informational meeting about the MSSRP is held in the fall. This meeting outlines program details, deadlines, research opportunities, and the application process. Successful completion of the MSSRP can lead to further training in FSM's Research Thesis Program. In conjunction with the HPME, research training is available through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). This MD/PhD program administered by the Graduate and Feinberg Schools may be an option if you wish to make research an integral part of your medical career and you meet Graduate School requirements. The MSTP expands the total educational period from 7 to 10 or 11 years, at the end of which you will have completed work for baccalaureate, PhD, and MD degrees. Students interested in the MSTP should apply by the beginning of the third year in the HPME. The medical school is deeply cognizant of its responsibility to educate medical scientists and teachers as well as clinicians. Opportunities for a challenging and satisfying life as a physician, medical scientist, medical educator, or some combination of these are unlimited. The HPME can provide you with the foundation upon which to build a successful and rewarding career in medicine. |
