HPME Curriculum
All HPME students must take specific science courses that will provide a strong foundation for the coursework in medical school. Required Science SequenceAccelerated Inorganic Chemistry | 1 quarter | The first year chemistry sequence consists of one quarter of inorganic chemistry and one quarter of physical chemistry designed to extend material presented in high school chemistry and to ensure uniformity of preparation for subsequent courses. | Accelerated Physical Chemistry | 1 quarter | Calculus- based Physics | 3 quarters | The physics courses provide a challenging quantitative consideration of classic and modern physics. | Organic Chemistry | 3 quarters | The three quarters of organic chemistry, which considers fundamental principles and theories and the reactions of aliphatic, aromatic and biological compounds, provides background for further study in medical school. | Biological Sciences | 4 quarters | Courses in the biological sciences that build on previous and concurrent study of chemistry, physics and mathematics are also required. Central topics in contemporary biology are emphasized in preparation of advanced study. |
In addition to the required coursework, HPME students choose courses in the social sciences and humanities from a wide array of offerings. Weinberg College of Arts and SciencesIn Weinberg, students pursue a customized course of study reflecting their academic needs and interests. The honors curriculum emphasizes flexibility and intellectual maturity. Faculty advisors work with students to design a program of study encouraging exploration of the many academic disciplines within the college. Weinberg Requirements In addition to the science requirements, students must complete six courses in both the social sciences and humanities. Students have considerable freedom in selecting courses in - English
- Philosophy
- Foreign language
- History
- Art history
- Music
- Economics
- Psychology
- Political science
- Behavioral science
- School of Communication
School of Communications
In the school of communication, students take classes in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department. Communication Requirements In addition to the required science sequence, HPME students must complete the following courses: - 4 science courses in CSD

- 3 clinically- oriented courses in CSD
- 3 electives in individual and social behavior
- 3 electives in the humanities
- 1 course in clinical applications
- Departmental writing requirement
McCormick School of Engineering and Applied ScienceIn McCormick, students pursue studies in engineering. While the program in medical engineering is tailored for HPME, students may elect to pursue any field of engineering offered at Northwestern. McCormick Requirements In addition to the required science sequence, HPME students in McCormick must complete the following courses: - 4 courses in calculus (2 of which may be satisfied with AP credits)
- 4 engineering analysis courses covering mechanics, linear algebra, computer proficiency, differential equations
- 3 courses in design and communication
- 5 basic engineering courses
- 1 unrestricted elective
- 6 elective courses in the social sciences and humanities chosen around a theme
- 7 advanced engineering courses in the chosen area of specialization
